The Times said Simmons, who earned two Oscar nominations during a long career that spanned seven decades, died at her home in Santa Monica after losing a battle to lung cancer.

The movie star's manager could not immediately be reached for comment.

Although she worked mostly in television in her later years, appearing in the hit 1983 mini-series "The Thorn Birds," for which she obtained an Emmy Award, Simmons gained fame in the 1950s and 1960s after starring in several hit films.

Her career took off after she appeared as the doomed Ophelia opposite Laurence Olivier in the legendary actor's 1948 production of "Hamlet." Simmons's performance earned her the first of two Academy Award nominations.

Among her notable early roles were playing the young Estella in David Lean's classic 1946 adaptation of "Great Expectations."

Later films included "Guys and Dolls," "Spartacus" and 1969's "The Happy Ending," which earned her a second Oscar nod for her portrayal of an alcoholic wife.

Simmons married twice -- to actor Stewart Granger from 1950 to 1960 and to director Richard Brooks from 1960 to 1977. Both marriages ended in divorce.

Mia Landingham, who weighs more than 21 stone, squashed Mikal Middlestone-Bey to death after they had a fight last August.

During her trial, Landingham apologised for killing eight-stone Mikal - the father of her three children.

Her attorney said there was a long history of domestic abuse in the relationship and asked the judge for leniency.

She was sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours community service after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter – despite facing a maximum five-year jail term.

Veer Movie Review, Ancestral feud. Mutual hatred. Boy meets girl. And if that ain't enough you have rom-com, song-dance sequences and comic relief. Those, as we all know, are the ingredients of the masala cocktail. They seem to be in almost the right proportion too. How much each element is allowed to marinade is where things go wrong. So, while it’s a go right ahead for "Salmaniacs", for others it's not a complete loss either.

That could be because some masalaparameters are kept void like a love triangle, a spy in the tribe, etc. But, if we really wanted to get into what could have been, there is a lot more that could've been straightened for it to make a better mark with the audiences. For example, the comic element in the romantic thread distracted from the story big time. The sincerity of the lovers didn't reach us mainly due to the laughs the makers seek to generate.

Then, there's the almost 3-hour length and the pace at which every elements of the story unfolds. While introduction to various Rajahs and Sardars and their black, white and guess what…some gray characters takes up the first half, it isn't boring. For one the way the camera moves, pans and zooms, make you marvel the terrain. Then the songs, especially Taali is composed, sung, picturized (in a smallish tribal den), and choreographed to draw and keep your attention.
