My role in 'Videsh' was the toughest of my life: Preity Zinta

Mumbai: The dimpled beauty of Bollywood Preity Zinta has gone ahead and essayed a yet another powerful role where her favourite topic ‘woman’ is explored. Playing a bettred wife in ‘Videsh’, Zinta reminds one of Aishwarya in ‘Provoked’, but the similarity ends here. Talking about the dark film in an exclusive interview with Spicezee.com, Zinta unravels the challenges she had to face during the making of ‘Videsh’.

Talking about the role, Zinta exclaimed, “This was the toughest role of my career. I had to work in -20 degrres temperature; I had to work with a snake!”

When asked about the paradoxical experience of working with Vansh – a debutant, and Deepa Mehta – a pro in her own field, Zinta was all praises for her co-star, “Vansh did a wonderful job in the film. He did not look like a newcomer at all. Hisw character had such subtle shades, one can’t simply go up before the camera and do it. One has to be a very good actor for instilling those subtle nuances into the character.”

“Every scene in this film is some woman's story. It is intense and beautiful. I can't talk enough of the film. I just want every woman, man and family to go and watch this film. It is very important for people to support films like these, which showcase a real slice-of-life,” Zinta said.

The film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Deepa Mehta, is about a battered Punjabi housewife in Canada. Zinta, who plays the lead in the film and has already bagged the best actress award at the Chicago Film Festival, says the subject of the film touched her and it was the realistic nature of the script that she found challenging.

“When Deepa offered me this role, it was a dream come true. I knew it would be a huge step towards something different in my career. It was definitely a difficult role. But it has touched me. Normally we see either black or white characters in films. But very few films offer an actor to play grey characters that are closer to reality. But with this film I got an opportunity to play such a true character,” she said.

In ‘Videsh’, which released as ‘Heaven On Earth’ abroad, Zinta is sharing screen space with newcomer Vansh Bhardwaj, but she also has another co-star - a giant snake, that "scared the hell" out of her.

“Vansh, my co-star in the film really surprised me. I was nervous to be cast opposite a newcomer, but he was very good. And I had a snake as my co-star who scared the hell out of me.

“When I was told to shoot with the snake, I acted bold and told the unit that I want a real snake for the scenes, but when I saw the snake I got extremely scared.” Zinta revealed.

Pensively, she added, “Still working on this film was the most enriching experience as an actor. When I am 80 years old and I'll look back, I'm sure 'Videsh' will be among the top five in the list of my favourite films.”

The film, slated for release March 27, was mainly shot in Toronto with a short sequence filmed in Chandigarh. It was shot in both Hindi and Punjabi.

Since the actress hails from Himachal Pradesh, she faced problems delivering dialogues in Punjabi.

“Language was an issue with me, I had to learn it. I had to struggle with it. People think that I know Punjabi very well, but that's not true. I had to work on that. The only four words I knew were 'sasriyakaal', 'chak de phatte', 'balle balle' and 'aaho',” she grinned.

Zinta also underwent a workshop for the film and her efforts have paid off with a nomination in the best actress category of the 24th Genie Awards, to be held in Canada in April.

Know your worthKnow your worth

So far so good. The awards season is about to end. And it feels wonderful when the deserving ones get their dues. Kangna Ranaut in Fashion sweeps the screen with her neurosis in a way that we’ve never seen before.

Seeing Priyanka Chopra clutch the trophy to her heart was a magical moment. Her speech at the Filmfare Awards was so splendidly warm. Who wrote it for you, Priyanka? Seriously, I know it was her own. But in the past I’ve had a number of actors calling me to have their speeches written. One of today’s ruling superstars would call from the awards’ venues and whisper, ‘Listen I’ve been nominated for the award in the comic category. Can you quickly tell me something funny to say if I win?’

The superstar of tomorrow was going to collect an award for best youth icon. Around 20 minutes before he reached the venue he sent an sms. ‘Quickly, give me a 300-word thank you speech.’ The two superstars mentioned above are no longer on talking terms with me.Maybe I didn’t live up to their expectations. If we only know what stars expect!

More than a big fat cheque, stars need a reality check. They insist on living a lie even when the truth stares at them in the face. If their films sink without trace, they blame the ‘unfair’ critics. If there’s an adverse buzz about their film, they blame the ‘opposite’ camp.

So many times, I’ve heard this or that Khan being blamed for a film’s failure. It all sounds so delusional and unreal. Showbiz is a delusional province. So many actors’ careers have suffered because they’ve slotted themselves wrongly and nobody has bothered to revise their self-worth. Manoj Bajpai and Randeep Hooda could do better provided they stop playing the conventional leading man.

Among all the products of Ram Gopal Varma’s factory, only Shimit Amin has made a mark. Rohit Jugaraj and now Prawal Raman are just beginning to find their space. Prawal is making a film on Bipolar Disorder which ironically could be a disease lots of our stars are suffering from. Why else would they attack you the minute you offer them sane but unflattering advice?

Not that I haven’t come across actors who can take criticism on their chin? Bipasha Basu, Abhishek Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra... these are stars who genuinely welcome my criticism. There’s another set of stars who pretend to welcome criticism. But actually want only to be praised.

It’s no longer about looking anxiously over the shoulder at the neighbour’s work. It’s about making sure the neighbour doesn’t make any headway.

Shilpa Shetty loves competition

Preity Zinta is no more a lone maiden that every cricketer wants to bowl over! After all, the sexy Shilpa Shetty too has entered the stadium, and is the apple of many-a-hottie’s eye.

With this being her first innings, SS, however, is loving it all — the love, admiration and even the competition. When we met the actress and asked her how she feels competing with the likes of Preity Zinta and Shah Rukh Khan, she said, “I love competition. I know I am competing with my friends, but frankly, more than anything else, our focus is on the game. May the best team win.” And just like the show goes on in Bollywood, the ball must keep rolling here... Go girls, our showgirls!

Asin’s the new fashion slave

Look who’s feeling left out. It’s Asin, dearies! The actress has to keep pace with Bollywood’s trends, and with the way our glam dolls dress up and groom themselves here, it can get a little peeving for some actresses.

So, we really don’t blame Asin if she is going that extra distance to look good, wear designer brands, and walk tall... “Since Ghajini’s success, Asin has been desperately making an attempt to dress well and look stylish. She feels her contemporaries put in a lot of effort in the way they look and dress,” says a close dost of the actress’. Asin with a little glit plus thoda glam is not such a bad idea, wot say?

Another 3-D Journey headed to theaters

LOS ANGELES: New Line is mounting a second 3-D "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

The first movie, made for about $60 million, was one of the first 3-D films to receive a wide release and grossed $240 million worldwide last year. Despite that, the studio waited to see the DVD numbers, which turned out to be robust, before committing to the sequel.

Eric Brevig is back as director and this time will be involved in the development of the script.

One challenge to mounting a second film was finding a story to tell; the source material for the first film, the book by Jules Verne, did not have a sequel. One concept considered was to set the story in Atlantis, but with several Atlantis projects in development at other studios and underwater photography costly, that idea was nixed.

The sequel's story line came together in the form of a spec script by Richard Outten, a writer whose last credited work was 1993-94 Fox TV series "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr."

Titled "Mysterious Travels," the adventure tale was based on the fantasy conceit that the literary tales "Gulliver's Travels," "Treasure Island" and Verne's own "Mysterious Island" all occurred on the same island.

Having bought the script, the producers are repurposing it to fit the "Journey" characters, who were played by Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson. The actors are expected to reprise their roles.

Farah Khan talks about her choreography comeback

MUMBAI: "Par log mujhe kahin jaane hi kahan dete hai", quips Farah Khan when questioned about her so called 'comeback' to the world of choreography, courtesy the Kylie Minogue song picturisation for the film Blue.

"I try to take a break from choreography and concentrate on directing films but at frequent intervals, something interesting comes up. Moreover, it's mainly friends with whom I am working with so when they come with a proposal, it's difficult to say no", says Farah who had last choreographed 'Desi Girl' for Dostana.

"There again I couldn't say no. People forget though that the gap that I now have between the songs that I choreograph has become huge. The song for Blue has been shot six months after I last called the shots for 'Desi Girl'", informs Farah.

Apart from friends, what is it that keeps bringing her back on the stage for choreographing a song or two when the fact is that long time back, she had supposedly hung up her boots and promised to stick to directing films?

"The overall setup matters as well", Farah makes a point here, "For me to leave my three babies back home, there has to be some real good reason. Here I was working with Tony (the film's director) whom I know since the days of JO JEETA WAHO SIKANDAR. Do you know that he had even acted in the film as one of the cycle riders? We became friends then and have been in touch since then. Then there was Akshay Kumar, Rahman, Kylie and of course Ashtvinayak (producers) - the combination was good enough for me to go for the song."

Deepika goes on a break

MUMBAI: Deepika Padukone doesn't believe in being greedy and signing as many projects that she can to remain in the rat race, she is definitely a class apart.

A committed professional that she is, Deepika just completed all her assignments on hand that included shooting for TV commercials (for 5 different brands) apart from her pending films. Now maintaining a low profile after the debacle of her last release, Chandni Chowk to China, Deepika has taken a much needed break before she begins her next film.

A close pal of Deepika added, "Deepika will start shooting for Farhan Akhtar starrer Kartik Calling Kartik, being produced by Farhan's banner Excel Entertainment, from April 4th. She has been working constantly for the last few months that included Saif Ali Khan's home production Love Aaj Kaland CC2C. So now before she begins a long cycle of constant work once again with Farhan's film and later Sajid Khan's directorial venture Housefull with Akshay Kumar she wants to take some rest and recharge herself. She is not in a hurry to sign multiple projects right now and is happy having only these two films on her hand.''

While what she intends to do in this break may not be revealed, but one thing is sure, she may finally get some quality time to spend with beau Ranbir Kapoor, who too is busy shooting in and around Mumbai these days.

Baton mein bhi rang hai...

They’re known for their colourful language, as they let fly at each other, bindaas, on national TV. TOI brings to you the queens of colour and drama...

Sambhavna Seth
Sambhavna also hit out at Rakhi, saying that even if the latter joined her on a dance reality show, she wouldn’t be doing any wonders. “If she joins the show, she’s not going to do any wonders. I have seen what she can do and I don’t want to see any further wonders from her. She has shown whatever she could have. Now it’s her chance to see what I can do. Age and experience-wise she is older and she should be left at that level,” she said.

Rakhi Sawant
“Woh mujhe dhoka de raha tha. He used me to give a boost to his career,” she said, after she broke up with Abhishek Awasthi (for the last and final time) and added, “Mai marna chahti hoon bas ab.” She also accused her mother of using her for money and compared herself to a sone ki murgi. “Mera use kiya gaya hai,” she cried herself hoarse.

Rakhi and birthday bashes certainly don’t go together. After she accused Mika of forcefully kissing her at his birthday bash, she invited Sambhavna Seth to her birthday party and then apparently called her a chudail. Sambhavna had said, “I got many calls from Rakhi inviting me to her birthday. She even threatened that would not cut the cake unless I went to the party. When I told her that I wouldn’t be able to come because I was unwell, she said, ‘Sau chudail mari hongi to tu paida hui, tujhe kuchh nahin hoga, aajana.’ I thought she was just joking. When I reached, Rakhi was busy talking to the media and pointing towards me said, ‘Aapne chudail dekhi hai?’ I couldn’t take it anymore and gave it back to her. I said ‘Haan, ek to mere saamne khadi hai’.

Rangbirange...
A nd now for a very different style statement. TOI presents the two people we think deserve special mention on Holi for bringing loads of colour to the silver screen – Govinda and Chunky Pandey.

Apna Chi Chi bhaiya’s clothes often defy description and almost require the viewer to wear dark glasses! Remember Raja Babu?

Chunky might not have been noticed for his performances, but his clothes certainly made an impression. Who can forget his floral Hawaiian shirt collection. We just wish somebody had told him that the seventies went by a long time ago!

Ayesha is quite a globe trotter

The term global is a strange one. An actress in Bollywood who does a bit of a role or more in a Hollywood or international film is called going ‘global.’

What can, then one say about Ayesha Dharker, who has always made a mark on the international scene by acting in Hollywood films (as also in French and Indian films), a Broadway musical, and television series in the United Kingdom?

More recently, she is being applauded for her role in the film Outsourced. She says that she loved the script because “it addresses things that are actually happening without being an ‘issue’ film.” How does she define herself as an actress? She says “I have worked all over the place, but more by virtue of having worked a long time and wanting to try new things. I have never really planned it that way, but I started out wanting to work on projects that were not totally commercial. I think the minute you define yourself as anything, you find that you are limiting yourself, so as an actor, I would never say I am looking for anything specific, except interesting characters and good scripts.”

Does she see herself doing a mainstream, commercial Bollywood entertainer? Ayesha says, “I think it would depend on the film, I have never said that I will never do an out and out commercial film and there are a lot of directors I really like. Unlike some people, I don’t have a group of actors I want to work with. I look more at the director and the script, so if the right project comes along, why not?”

She is quite a globe trotter that way. And understandably some of her favourite cities are scattered across the world. “I have ended up in lots of different places, but my favourites are definitely London, New York and Paris. Mumbai trumps them all as far as I am concerned, but I never get bored of these cities because there is always something more to see or do. I love travelling though and I would love to go to Cuba or Mexico, but the list is endless — I am quite obsessed with history so am always drawn to places that have something that connects me to real events.” She has a special connection with Vadodara though, especially so because her aunts live here.

“I have come to Vadodara on and off throughout my life because of my family, so I am really fond of it. I was really happy when my film was screened here. I have always loved the older parts of the city because it is a city with so much history, that sometimes gets overlooked. I really love the museum in the palace grounds and the statue of Indira Raje. I loved the stories connected with that place. It is also full of talented artists, so I have always enjoyed talking to them,” says Ayesha.

Is Ayesha an avid reader or is she the sort of a person who loves going to the beach and relaxing? “Wow. I wish I could say I have seen a beach recently,” she laughs, “but yes, one of the great but also frustrating things about my job is that I spend most of the time travelling and I do read a lot. I am reading Amitav Ghosh’s new book Sea of Poppies at the moment which talks about the opium trade, and it’s terrific. Also I am re-reading The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas which is a wonderful chocolate box of a book, full of swashbuckling and political intrigue. Brilliant.”

So does she feel the effects of recession, especially in the entertainment industry? Is she the sort of person who always saves, no matter what? “I am a bit of a saver and have never been much of a spendthrift. I do have an alarmingly large collection of shoes, but that really is my only indulgence. The effects of the economic collapse has been felt very strongly in my industry in England especially, with a lot of TV stations cutting back on the sweeping dramas they used to make before and long-running shows coming to an end. In India, however the film industry remains robust and that is such a fortunate and wonderful thing.”

13B is scary!

As though watching poor Amarr Upaddhyay as a constantly air-played character in a daily soap in Madhavan’s home is not scary enough, the soap’s plot seems to have a direct bearing on Madhavan and his family.

A jolting and original premise for a spook-fest shot (by H Laxminarayan and P C Sriram) in chromatic colours, gets us as close to the basic feelings of fear, foreboding and doom as cinema is capable of getting.

Vikram Kumar knows his Manoj Night Shyamalan and Steven Speilberg well enough. There are no attempts to create false terror through intrusive sound effects. As in Ram Gopal Varma’s Bhoot we feel a supernatural presence in Madhavan’s home without being subjected to ghoulish visuals. But Bhoot erred by withholding too much of the horror beneath the calm surface.

In 13B there are enough moments of aggravated suspense and terror to keep you on the edge of your seat without toppling over. The entire premise of the happenings in a soap dictating the lives of those who occupy the larger space outside the 71-inch screen is explored with a fair degree of technical and intellectual finesse.

Blessedly, the narrative isn’t the lead laden with thoughts on the spiritual axis that binds human beings with God and His opposite. However, the film does prompt us to question the way destiny destroys our plans of a blissful ‘normal’ life. Beyond that it focuses on telling a tightly-woven tale of domestic terror.

No parts of the film are amateurishly designed. As far as creating an ominous eerie atmosphere is concerned the director does so without one creaking door or ear-shattering sound effect.

That’s quite an achievement.

The performances echo the normal even-pitched sound design. Madhavan keeps his pivotal role of a workingclass man whose life is suddenly dictated by television on an even keel. Neetu Chandra as his wife blends beautifully in the fearful fabric. The rest of the cast is inconspicuous.

But Dhritiman Chatterjee as the blind neighbour is frightening. Ever wondered why a blind man is so scary in a supernatural thriller? As he struggles with the dark, so do the other characters caught in the other-world where logic and rationale fail.

Mercifully, 13B looks believable even when looking into the world of the supernatural.

Emraan Hashmi has his way

Emraan Hashmi is flying high and how. The success of solo-hero starrers, Jannat (2008) and Raaz - The Mystery Continues (2009), has ensured Emraan such a standing in the film industry that his demands are met, despite the presence of an established star. For Ekta Kapoor’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, where he plays the role of the young don Dawood Ibrahim, he has laid down a condition in his contract, that he should be given as lengthy a role and equal publicity as his co-star Ajay Devgan, who plays Haji Mastan in the film. A source close to the production house said, “Emraan’s uncles, Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt, were not in favour of him doing Ekta’s film as they feared that he might end up playing second fiddle to an established actor like Ajay Devgan. However, Emraan loved the script and was very confident about his role. The film’s story revolves around how Haji Mastan passes the mantle to a young and emerging don Dawood. Nevertheless, in order to ensure that everything that was promised to him will be delivered, he laid down a condition in the contract saying that he should be given equal prominence as Ajay Devgan in terms of footage and publicity.”

Confirming the news about the contract, Emraan Hashmi says, “Well, it’s true. The film is based on the shift of power from Ajay Devgan to me. Obviously, I don’t do films for the love of anyone or to be just another name in the credits. It is the central character besides Ajay’s character in the film.”

Bipasha Basu gave up late night parties for John’s sake

Mumbai: When it comes to giving in to gangly hunk John Abraham’s outrageous demands, even the gutsy babe Bipasha Basu’s feminist principles take a back seat. The Bongshell, who is known to be a night bird as she loves to go party hopping, has decided to bid adieu to her wild night-outs as her beau doesn’t approve of her fun-seeking ways.

The couple that has stood the test of time for many years now is touted to be one of the most happening love-birds of B-town. But off screen, this ‘It’ couple is not as fashionable as it would seem.

According to Bips, the seemingly uber-cool John Abraham is a protective boyfriend, who is much too concerned of the company his lady keeps.

Speaking to a news daily, the spunky actress said, "I used to go to late night parties and clubs earlier but now I don't have time for all that. In fact John didn't like it. He used to accompany me every time I went to such parties. When you are on the floor, there are lots of people who just try to come close to dance with even if you don't want. Quite often they misbehave. It's a place where people drink and dance. So there are possibilities of such things which may annoy you."

So, taking a way out the actress just decided to give her parties a miss. "If somebody came closer to me, John used to immediately come down on the floor and become a kind of protective wall for me. I enjoyed my parties for a while but later on I realised that John didn't like it. So I stopped doing that. Since then it has been a long time that I went for any dance party", added Bips.

Miss India crown doesn’t guarantee Bollywood success: Neha Dhupia

New Delhi, Former Miss India Neha Dhupia, who has as many as five films lined up this year, says winning a beauty pageant is no guarantee of striking gold in Bollywood and that it’s only hard work that finally counts.

“It’s not easy to create a place for yourself in Bollywood even if you have a pageant behind you. No one in the industry was holding special carpets for me because I had won the Miss India contest. You have to work hard if you want to prove something. It’s taken me a long time to carve a niche for myself, but I’m glad that finally I have done it,” Neha told IANS on phone from Goa.

The actress is set to appear in five movies this year - “Paying Guest” with Mukta Arts, “Pappu Can’t Dance Saala” and “Raat Gayi Baat Gayi” by actor-director Saurabh

Kangana Ranaut to play Madhubala

Once Upon a Time in Mumbai could possibly be Kangana Ranaut’s magnum opus as she is slated to star as the veteran actress Madhubala who was also

Haji Mastan’s love interest. The film deals with the real story of the underworld don of the 1960’s, Haji Mastan.

Once Upon a Time in Mumbai will be produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji films and directed by Milan Luthria. Before zeroing in on Kangana, Luthria had also considered Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra for the role. Our source said, “Kangana’s selection is a good thing as although Ajay Devgan and Emraan Hashmi were on board, the producers couldn’t shoot for a long time because Luthria was unable to select an actress. Only recently did Luthria and Ekta settle on Kangana.” Now, with cast in place, the film is scheduled to go on floors in April and will be shot across Mumbai.

Although Bollywood has made films on Haji Mastan before, like Deewar, this film will concentrate on the romantic angle between Haji Mastan and Madhubala. Ajay Devgan will play Haji Mastan and Emraan Hashmi will play the young Dawood.

Neha Dhupia is Busy Making Her Place in Bollywood

Former Miss India Neha Dhupia, who has as many as five films lined up this year, says winning a beauty pageant is no guarantee of striking gold in Bollywood and that it's only hard work that finally counts.

"It's not easy to create a place for yourself in Bollywood even if you have a pageant behind you. No one in the industry was holding special carpets for me because I had won the Miss India contest. You have to work hard if you want to prove something. It's taken me a long time to carve a niche for myself, but I'm glad that finally I have done it," Neha told IANS on phone from Goa.

The actress is set to appear in five movies this year - "Paying Guest" with Mukta Arts, "Pappu Can't Dance Saala" and "Raat Gayi Baat Gayi" by actor-director Saurabh Shukla, "Raftaar" co-starring Emraan Hashmi and Priyadarshan's "De Dhana Dan".

In "Pappu Can't Dance Saala", her first release this year, Neha is acting along with funny man Vinay Pathak.

"In this comedy film I'm doing with Vinay Pathak, I play the role of a Maharashtrian back-up dancer. It was something very different for me because I'm not a Maharashtrian. I had to learn the mannerisms of the character, who is a complete brat and a bully, but Saurabh (Shukla) helped me a lot," she explained.

Neha maintains that she has become more careful while choosing projects as she doesn't want to get typecast in a certain role.

"I'm holding myself back now and doing only interesting projects."

After winning the Miss India crown in 2002, Neha stepped into Bollywood with 2003 "Qayamat: City Under Threat", which starred Ajay Devgan. She got noticed when she did the bold "Julie" in 2004, but got typecast in a glamorous image.

She went on to do films like "Kyaa Kool Hai Hum" and "Shootout At Lokhandwala", but she tried to break her glam image with "Chup Chup Ke", "Mithya", "Maharathi" and "Dasvidaniya".

"I feel in our industry you get typecast instantly. When I started off I was offered other roles as well, but I chose the ones I did and got stuck with one image, which was hard to break. That was a mistake and I've learnt from that. There was no guiding force for me when I entered Bollywood," Neha said.

Like many others in Bollywood, Neha too admits she would love to work with Shah Rukh Khan and Mani Ratnam, but adds that she doesn't consider anyone her competition in the industry.

"I don't consider anyone my competition. Everyone is great and so talented. Why compete? I would rather be a collective part of the industry," the actress said.

Adnan Sami’s son’s visit from Pakistan makes the family emotional

Adnan Sami's son Azaan flew down from Pakistan to Mumbai to visit his ailing grandfather.

"I was shocked to see my grandson who came all the way from Pakistan to see me" says the grandfather.

Kareena’s Mom Exasperated, Saif Delighted By The Awards Festival

Kareena has received as many as four awards in the last one month. And she loves it "Who doesn't like attention, recognition and awards? I've got four awards in a month beginning with the environment award I got from Erin Brockovich, then two youth icon awards from Rotary International and Stardust. And now on Tuesday I was honoured by FICCI which Mr Yash Chopra gave to me."

Kareena is running out space to keep the trophies. " My mother gets exasperated each time I bring home another trophy . Saif wants to know where I'm going to keep all of them. I've set aside a whole enclave for trophies and awards. I love looking at them. One day my children are going to look at them and be proud of me."

For children to happen Kareena first needs to get married. "It won't happen for the next two years for sure. Am I crazy to get married now when so many wonderful things are happening to my career? Saif himself is ultra-busy trying to set up his production house. Marriage can wait. I'm just happy to have him by my side. I've got the best guy any girl can ever have. Right now I'm so busy I don't have time to sleep properly. I haven't even had time to move into my new house."

After a long time Kareena will be in Mumbai for a some time now. "I've a month-long schedule of Rensil's film coming up in Mumbai."

It's hard for Kareena to keep up with the surge crowds and awards in her life.

In Delhi last week , Saif and Kareena returned home this week to Mumbai without much shooting done for Rensil d'Silva's film.

"We never expected such crowds. They were everywhere. And it was impossible to shoot," she says sounding not the least put off. "Those people who love me out there keep me going. I love my fans and awards."

And now Delhi will have to be fudged in the Mumbai schedule of d'Silva's film.

The extent of the surging crowds in Delhi in the key shooting spots like Jama Masjid and Janpath for Rensel D'Silva's untitled film was so huge and unmanageable that the unit has returned without shooting the required sequences.

Back in Mumbai after a week of futile shooting Kareena says , " Everywhere we went there were these huge number of people who had come to see Saif and me. They were very sweet very well-behaved. But unfortunately the number of people in key places like Jama Masjid and Janpath was always too high to shoot properly."

Resultantly there was almost no shooting.

Says Kareena, "We did can some shots. But it was impossible to shoot with wide-angle lenses because the crowds were everywhere. We'll now have to recreate some of the Delhi sequences in Mumbai."

Kareena is certainly not unhappy about the attention she got in Delhi. "The people in Delhi were so warm. It just made me realize how much of a responsibility I have towards my audience. At this stage of my career I'd rather take another holiday than do a bad film." -Sampurn Media

Dostana

Dostana nomination surprised Abhishek

Abhishek Bachchan is proud to be half-Bengali. And Bengalis return the sentiment — apparently, they loved him in Abhishek Bachchan.

“I’m surprised by the popularity and reach of that film. We didn’t even think it would make it to the awards nominations let alone collect awards. The Filmfare award nomination that I got for Dostana completely took me by surprise. Normally the only dramatic performances get nominated. But the truth is, comedy is very very hard to do. And I’m glad Filmfare realised that.”

Abhishek had to skip the after-party thrown by Karan Johar because Aishwarya had a very early-morning flight to catch to Kolkata.

Abhishek who has done two Bengali films and a cameo as his mother’s son in Raja Sen’s Desh is open to another Bengali film.

Recently, both Abhishek and his wife got a warm welcome in Kolkata, which found a bahu in Aishwarya. When earlier this week he landed in Kolkata for the shooting of Mani Ratnam’s film (tentatively titled Raavan) Abhishek got the welcome of a prodigal son. Abhishek’s father is regarded as Bengal’s Jamai Babu, as Jaya Bachchan happens to be Bengali.

A few years ago when father and son Bachchan were shooting simultaneously in Kolkata the senior AB had said, “Earlier, they cheered for me. Now they cheer for my son.”

“Not true,” says Abhishek. “Even today if we both come to Kolkata together the crowds will be rooting for him. This time I got a super-enthusiastic welcome because this was my first visit to Kolkata with Aishwarya.”
But Aishwarya Rai Bachchan isn’t even remotely Bengali!

Explains Abhishek, “I think it has to do with the very powerful work she has done with Rituparno Ghosh in Chokher Bali and Raincoat. Bengal has adopted her as a daughter-in-law. I too have done some very important films in Kolkata, Ritu’s Aantar Mahal and Mani Ratnam’s Yuva. And I must say I got a rousing welcome in Kolkata every time. But nothing compared with the way I was received this time.”

Aishwarya had been shooting gruelling scenes in Kolkata for Mani’s film on the Ganges.
Abhishek describes Kolkata as a big morale booster. “Everytime I feel demoralised I should make a trip to Kolkata. They just smother you in their love.”

Everywhere that Abhishek and his wife go in Kolkata the crowds are sure to follow. “Mani’s film and then Abhinay Deo’s where Aishwarya and I come together again are sure to warmly received in Bengal,” exults Abhishek.

Deepika & Sonam: Toast to the dosts

We know how these young beauties have buried the hatchet, called off their catfights, and are going about town, flaunting their large hearts Deepika Padukone

that let bygones be bygones, and of course their dosti.

Only recently, we met up with dippy Deepika Padukone. She’ll next be seen in Love Aaj Kal, but just what did she think of good friend Sonam Kapoor’s Delhi-6. “I haven’t watched it yet, but it’s not my fault.

Sonam had planned a special screening for her friends, which she keeps delaying,” complains Padukone, adding, “But I’ve heard that she has performed brilliantly and I am looking forward to watching it.” We’re not sure if D-6 was such a khaas film, but we admire this dosti aaj kal!

Celina Jaitley

Celina Jaitley tries to be Priyanka

We did inform you of Celina Jaitley’s Kannada debut. Well, a little more about it... The actress will be cast opposite South superstar Upendra,
Celina Jaitley

in the film Shreemati. Now, we’ve heard that the movie is a remake of the Bollywood blockbuster Aitraaz and Celina will essay the role that Priyanka Chopra was seen in.

Interestingly, Priyanka’s role in Aitraaz was first been offered to Celina by Abbas Mustan, but she had turned it down. It was surely Celina’s loss then. Priyanka shot to fame with the movie. Looking back now, Celina doesn’t seem to have any aitraaz doing the Kannada version of the flick. Question: Has Celina been hitting her head and saying ‘Celi’ me!’

Sushmita Sen

You go, girl : Sushmita

I’d choose Hillary Clinton. She contested courageously against Barack Obama, lost and then went on to

take up the post of secretary of state. She didn’t fall apart even when she had trouble in her personal life, moved ahead and put it all behind her.

Her Indian counterpart is Sonia Gandhi. I think she’s a great leader. She’s someone who never spoke a word of Hindi and who lost her husband at an early age. In spite of all the pressure, she moved on with determination and is now the virtual head of our ruling government.

Prahlad Kakkar, ad guru
Sonia Gandhi is the epitome of dignity, strength and elegance. She takes her stand with grace. She’s the kind of person that even men look up to. Another commendable woman is Renuka Chowdhury. She is a true warrior for women’s rights and someone who’s not shaken by anything. If there’s an enemy of women today, it’s Nirmala Venkatesh, who’s betrayed her kind.

Raj Shroff, fashion designer
Sonia Gandhi is an icon for today’s women. She’s extraordinarily courageous, surviving in a world of dirty politics and holding her own amid male politicians. Sushmita Sen is the ultimate woman of substance. She is like a man living a woman’s life. She is independent and caring. She knows to live life on her own terms.

Aditya, actor
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is an example of a perfect woman. She’s one of the most beautiful women in the world and the first Indian actress to have achieved global fame. She’s taken India to the international arena.

Kylie Minogue Snubs Shah Rukh Khan

Kylie Minogue snubbed Shah Rukh Khan by refusing to meet

Australian pop sensation, Kylie Minogue was in India for just a week but she has ruffled quite a few feathers. The latest is that she refused to meet superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

After the rousing welcome given to Kylie in India, she soaked in the attention, but only for a while. In India, to shoot a song for Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd.'s Blue, in which she has also sung a number, Kylie has disappointed and even enraged many of her Indian fans by outright refusing to meet them. Sensing the hordes of visitors that she would receive and to avoid any disturbance on the sets, Kylie insisted on having a 'No Entry' sign put up on the sets of Blue, to discourage people from flocking to the sets.

A source close to the production house said, “Kylie and her manager have ruffled quite a few feathers in Bollywood. After Kylie laid a condition that no visitor would be allowed on the sets while she was shooting, including the families of the co-actors, she meant even the Bollywood fraternity. After reading an interview of Kylie, which mentioned Shah Rukh Khan’s Om Shanti Om as one of her favourite Bollywood films, Shah Rukh’s office got in touch with Kylie, expressing the superstar’s desire to meet her. However, Kylie flatly refused to meet Shah Rukh on the film sets. Kylie’s manager instead conveyed to Shah Rukh that the meeting could only happen at the completion party of the film, which happened last night. This is not the first time that Kylie has snubbed a Bollywood star. Earlier, even Anusha Dandekar, who had gone with Zayed Khan, was denied entry on the sets by Kylie’s security.”

Meanwhile, the much-publicised party to be hosted by Sanjay Dutt did not happen. The source added, “Sanjay Dutt and his business manager had announced that they would be hosting a party for Kylie. But Kylie was never informed about any such party and was not even aware of it. Kylie left the country last night and the party never happened.”

Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut & Sonam share their style secrets

The story goes thus. Smalltown girl from the hills comes to tinseltown. She walks through the fashion district and halts in front of a red Kangana

Moschino dress. It calls out to her seductively. The tag says Rs 80,000 — the exact amount left in her account. Kangana Ranaut buys the dress. Food will have to wait.

It was a sartorial quirk that has certainly stood the 22-year-old in good stead. Three years into Bollywood and the waif-like beauty is already being serenaded for a unique diva-like appeal and superb style sense. Her model-like figure enhances even the most outrageous colours and cuts. Not to mention the hair. While actresses preferred the ironed, poker-straight mane, Kangana has stayed with her spirals. Going against the tide not just in her choice of roles, but also in matters of style.

While living in the small valley in Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh was the farthest the Ranauts could consider as fashion mecca. Her father would take them there for shopping. Young Kangana would devour every magazine she could lay her hands on while working in a beauty parlour, looking closely at movie posters pasted on walls.

But thankfully, after her foray into the industry, her sensibilities weren’t fashioned by Bollywood’s never-ending love affair with bling. No chiffon, swarowski-studded saris for her; Kangana made a splash in a swish of silk gowns and slashed-to-the-navel necklines; her unruly hair piled on top of her head like a crown. She wasn’t doing it for shock value; that’s just the way she is.

By the next year, everyone was wearing gowns at movie dos. Her clothescape is soiled only by a canary yellow outfit with a bikini top and yellow sash around her neck. A small price to pay for experimentation. “I dress according to my moods. When

I wear a black dress, it’s because I feel stark. At most, I’ll sit with Rick (Roy) and tell him what I have in mind and we’ll come up with something.”
Her icons are international — Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham. “I wear white shirt, shorts and bowler hat when I’m abroad”. Closer home, “Rita (Dhody) really knows how to dress for the occasion,” she says.

While her slim figure has mostly been draped in western ensembles Kangana loves saris too. “But it’s just too much to mind. Maybe I’ll wear them when I’m older and have two kids!”

Her obsession with clothes sees her following TV and magazines, where a favourite design is quickly sketched for future inspiration. Her fashion diktat: never shy to experiment. “There is really no such thing as a badly dressed person, only a constantly badly dressed person. I love women with short-short hair who wear oversized shirts with skinny pants; women in hand-blocked kurtas and kajal. I love all kinds of clothes.” And all kinds of clothes love her.
