Melody Gardot latest news updates :- Rising jazz singer Melody Gardot is getting ready to play her first concert in Seoul.
Gardot, who received critical acclaim for her latest album, “My One and Only Thrill,” will be performing at Centennial Hall, Yonsei University, March 16.
“My One and Only Thrill,” her second album, debuted at number 2 on the Billboard charts, and topped the charts in Japan. The 24-year-old has received acclaim for her silky smooth vocals and songwriting skills, but it’s her story of overcoming physical hardships that is truly inspiring.
A fashion student at Community College of Philadelphia, Gardot’s life changed when she was involved in a serious accident in Philadelphia when she was 19 years old. She was riding a bicycle when she was hit by a car. As a result, she suffered severe neural, spinal and pelvic injuries that kept her in the hospital for a year. One of the effects of her injuries is hypersensitivity to both light and sound, requiring her to wear dark sunglasses all the time.
During her treatment, a doctor suggested music therapy to help with her memory loss. Gardot started to learn how to sing, play the guitar and write songs. The experience has prompted Gardot to become an advocate of music therapy, having visited hospitals and universities to talk about how music can reconnect neural pathways in the brain, improve speech and boost one’s spirits.
After recovering from the accident, Gardot started playing at various venues in Philadelphia. She soon recorded a demo, which attracted the attention of major record label Universal Music. Her debut album “Worrisome Heart” was released in 2006.
In 2008, she started working with producer Larry Klein on “My One and Only Thrill. Released last year, it has been praised for its sophisticated jazz and blues sound. She wrote all the songs on the album, except for the bossa nova version of “Over the Rainbow.”
“Being able to listen to Melody’s beautiful voice and enjoy her songs is a real blessing. Her endless love of music and her thoughtful demeanor towards her fans really proves her to be a true musician who sings and performs from her heart and soul,” organizer Private Curve said, in a statement.
Horror Film Legion Released, British actor Paul Bettany leads the cast of the new horror film "Legion."The movie presents a disturbing vision of the Apocalypse that culminates in a showdown between God and man. Bettany portrays the powerful archangel Michael, who comes to Earth on a prophesied Judgment Day to help the remaining humans survive a coming slaughter.
The 38-year-old London-born, classically-trained actor explained why he was interested in the role. "Well, I've never had the opportunity to be the good guy in an action movie before. And, you know, that was a draw. And I really liked the script. It felt actually like a sort of hearkening back to sort of '70s movies that I grew up loving. And movies like 'Dawn of the Dead.'"
Bettany also talked about concerns many people seem to have about an end times scenario being unleashed on Earth. "I think we all are. Even if you don't sort of believe in it in a sort of Biblical way. And I think its sort of in our culture, and I think everybody's like completely, and rightly so, very worried about our way in which we're damaging the world in which we live. So I think it's really out there in the ether." "Legion" also stars American actors Dennis Quaid, Tyrese Gibson and Adrianne Palicki.
Quaid said he is skeptical about a looming Apocalypse. "I think people romanticize about the end of the world," smiled the 55-year-old actor. "It makes us feel like our lives our bigger. Like our humdrum lives are a little bit bigger than they are. And, but once it actually comes about, bad things happen, and it's really kind of a drag."
Palicki shared that although she also doesn't think the world will end in her lifetime, she believes many people are anxious and intrigued by the possibility. "Well, you know, I think it's always possible," said Palicki, 26. "I don't think I'm going to see it. I hope not anyways. We, you know, definitely we're headed in that direction. And, that's the interest there, as well as a lot of books and talk. There's talk of the world ending in 2012 or what not. So I think it's getting closer, and I think more people are getting scared about it. The more scared they are about it, the more they want to see it."
R&B singer-turned-actor Tyrese Gibson said he is not worried about a Judgment Day, but noted that he was pleased to be a member of the cast. "I don't believe world is ending," shared Gibson, 31. "But I was happy to be a part of this film, as a student of film. Looking to learn as much as I could learn from the likes of Paul Bettany and Dennis Quaid and Charles Dutton, and everybody else. So I had a great time, and I hope people enjoy the film."
"Legion" was directed by Scott Stewart, a visual effects guru-turned-filmmaker. Films exploring similar end-of-the-world themes, "The Road" with Viggo Mortensen, and "The Book of Eli," starring Denzel Washington, were released earlier this year. "Legion" opened across North America on Friday, January 22.

"Inglorious Basterds," ''Precious" and "Up in the Air" lead film nominees, while "Dexter," ''30 Rock" and "The Closer" are the top TV competitors.
"Basterds" earned nods for its cast and supporting stars Christoph Waltz and Diane Kruger. "Precious" was also nominated for outstanding performance by a film cast, along with nods for star Gabourey Sidibe and supporting actress Mo'Nique. "Up in the Air" collected nominations for star George Clooney and supporting actresses Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick.
Other films competing for best cast — SAG's equivalent of a best-picture prize — include "The Hurt Locker," ''An Education" and "Nine," which also earned a nod for supporting actress Penelope Cruz.
"Dexter" and "The Closer" are up for best performance by a cast in a drama series, along with "Mad Men," ''The Good Wife" and "True Blood."
Michael C. Hall, who plays Dexter, is nominated for best actor and the show's stunt team is up for outstanding performance by a stunt ensemble on TV. "The Closer" earned nods for its stunt team and star Kyra Sedgwick.

The actors union will present 13 awards during the two-hour dinner-party ceremony: Eight in television, five in film and a lifetime achievement award to 88-year-old Betty White, who starred in the TV comedy series "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Golden Girls."
"Our show is so special compared to other awards shows," said SAG Awards executive producer and director Jeff Margolis. "The fact that it is a show for actors, and it's actors voting for actors for doing good work. It's just different from the other shows, so we take great pride in keeping it different and special."
The Screen Actors Guild Awards often are an accurate predictor of success at the Academy Awards because actors constitute the largest voting bloc for the Oscars.
Last year the cast award went to "Slumdog Millionaire," which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar. However, this year one strong Best Picture contender, James Cameron's "Avatar," was not nominated in any SAG category.
